Does Newspaper Serve?

At Friends’ Central Middle School, there has been some question as to whether Newspaper should be a club, a specials class or an after-school activity instead of a Service group.  A look at our mission statement offers readers a clear idea of why we are here: to serve the community. The Phoenix Inquirer, a source of information and entertainment available to all students, faculty and community members, is a service to the school.

While many Service groups strive to improve the community by spending time with disabled or older people, cleaning up the nearby stream, or organizing in the Admissions Department, The Phoenix Inquirer is published to report on recent events and relevant issues in the Middle School and beyond.  Like students in Service-Thru-Art and Students of Culture, we are working hard to make FCS an interesting and educated community.  The Phoenix Inquirer staff spends every minute of our meetings working efficiently and imaginatively to produce the published work that appears on our website.

As a newspaper, we aim to keep those around us up-to-date so that they know what has happened and what needs to happen to create a better world.  Our job is to publicize important events, such as the Middle School musical, and to raise community awareness of our world’s issues, like cancer among Tasmanian devils.  In this way, we are serving these events’ organizers and participants and those affected by global issues and conflicts.  In addition, we will have in our next issue “News to Use,” a page of information such as athletic schedules and lunch menus that every student and faculty member can access on a daily basis.

We, the staff of The Phoenix Inquirer, put together a published work, by the community and for the community, that is created in the spirit of stewardship and service.  We look forward to hearing from you, our readers, as the year continues.

Letters to the editors of The Phoenix Inquirer are welcomed at msnews@friendscentral.org.
