Restaurant Review: Hymie’s Merion Delicatessen

“Your boss will be here. Your boss’s boss will be here. Shouldn’t you be here too?”

Hello everyone! It is Charlie and Tucker, the dynamic duo collaborating yet again. As you may know, there have been some tragedies in the Jewish community across the country, and we thought it would be a perfect time to review a Jewish deli! Here we have Hymie’s Merion Delicatessen, which is an incredible Jewish deli located in Merion Station (hence the name), near two other fabulous restaurants, Saffron (find our review for that here), and Shangri-la (review coming soon!).

Decor

Hymie’s is known for it’s traditional diner feel, as well as its durability. It has been around since 1955 and has even survived a truck crashing into the building! But what most people cherish about Hymie’s design is the interior. Jewish history suffocates the walls of the building. The soft cushioned seats compliment people of all ages, and the photographic artwork on the walls adds originality.

FOOD!

Although the decor is wonderful, the brightest spot of this deli is the food. Come in and check out it’s world famous pickle bar, with everything from salads to veggies and even pickles!

The menu itself has a plethora of delicious food. Their breakfast can be completed with the Triple Two, a combination of Hymie’s farm fresh eggs, buttermilk pancakes, and bacon or sausage, or one of their tasty omelets, thick Challah French toasts, or fluffy waffles, topped with ice cream.

Main dishes are represented by everything that you could possibly imagine. Chow down on a classic deli sandwich or panini, including the Mr. Schmucker Sandwich, which has corned beef, cole slaw, and Russian dressing. Pile them up with truckloads of freshly cut meat in many varieties, and top them with your favorite toppings. If you want a healthier option, consider the dozens of salad options available. And their famous mouthwatering Matzo ball soup is the perfect starter and finisher for every meal.

And the desserts. Oh the desserts!

While ordering takeout, you pass by a ton of cookies, chocolate covered pretzels, and other irresistable treats, but are all pale in comparison to the stuff on the menu.

After finishing your meal, savor a milkshake, malt, or New York style egg cream, which satisfy almost every person out there.

But here is the good stuff, the thing that everyone talks about (even mimes!), their sky-high layered cakes and other such desserts. No explanation needed. I mean, just look at this! Pure perfection in the form of a dessert.

Their legendary selection of desserts… but which to choose?

Legacy

Hymie’s is a very popular restaurant around Philadelphia. Dylan Adamczyk ‘22 from the newspaper enjoys their Challah French toast, while Ms. Kenealy prefers the brisket sandwich. Blake Riesenfield ‘22 will choose Matzo ball soup, and Jacob Lowry ‘22 can’t help but chow down the corned beef sandwich.

Mobility

And if you can’t eat there, or you prefer eating at home, takeout is easy and just as good. Order a bagel or meat or cheese, get a pickle on the side, and top it off with a pretzel or two.

Bagels, bagels, and more bagels!

Cons

While it is great that Hymie’s is well known around Merion Station, it means that Hymie’s is always crowded, and they do not accept reservations, so you might have to wait a couple of minutes before you can sit down and enjoy your meal.

The Verdict

Hymie’s Deli is a delicious occasional restaurant stop-by, with delicious food, terrific atmosphere, and if you can wait a few minutes, excellent service. We give Hymie’s Merion Deli 9.5 out of 10 stars. See you next time for a Restaurant Review!
