FCS Goes to the National History Bee

Welcome to a short article on the National History Bee! We have some great news: four contestants from our school are moving on to the national finals. (That is a record high for Friends’ Central.) The finals will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on June 1-4. The four contestants are: Sam Kazak, Charlie Szwartz, Jacob Lowry, and Dev Gupta. All of us would like to thank Mr. Chagan for the time he put into the Bee and all the times he helped us practice and prepare for the finals. The next paragraph is Mr. Chagan’s interview. (Note: The italics are me asking the question.)

What do you think about the regional finals and the history bee in general?

I think the opportunity for students to compete in the regional finals is a terrific opportunity for them to get a chance to work with kids across different grades and they get a chance to demonstrate their love for history. It also makes them feel pretty good about their accomplishments. I don’t think it mattered if you just took a test or came to meetings on Wednesdays. Whether you actually qualified for the regional finals or made it to nationals I think the whole experience is really wonderful for them.
