Welcome Yianni!

Written Anonymously On April 5, 2017, a new student appeared on campus grounds. His name is Yianni Krontiris, and he comes from a middle school in his small town that he lives in. His old school, Strath Haven Middle, was not the best fit for him. He had visited various schools, but Friends’ Central was his top choice. On the day he first visited FCS, he had shadowed a student named Jared Miller. “He was really kind to me,” Yianni stated. “He showed me around the school, and gave me the best hospitality FCS had to offer. I was also impressed with the way how all the students were friendly, and it made me feel that this was the best school for me.” This past Wednesday was Yianni‘s first day, and he was really excited to see all the friends he made when he first visited. He was shadowing Elijah Lee on…

Tech Review: GTX 1080 Ti

On February 28, 2017, the company Nvidia released its new flagship graphics card1, the GTX 1080 Ti, which gives a 35% performance improvement compared to Nvidia’s GTX 1080 graphics card. The GTX 1080 Ti also has just edged out Nvidia’s former most powerful GPU, the Titan XP, by a few Megahertz2 in processing power. The 1080 Ti also has two power connectors compared to the GTX 1080’s one, which means more power, which equals better performance. The 1080 Ti is the largest improvement in performance compared to any regular vs. Ti. Here are some comparisons between the 1080 and the 1080 Ti in various games. The numbers on the right show the performance gain between the 1080 and 1080 Ti. These test were run at 4K4 resolution. This article is about a high schooler who competed in a music competition called the PMEAs, which stands for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association. The interview is below. Can you please tell me your name? My name is Anjali Gupta and I’m in 11th grade. What instrument do you play? I played oboe for four maybe five years now. I heard you were competing in a competition called the PMEAs.   Yeah, it’s really competitive and basically all schools are divided up into districts. We are is in District 11 so I compete against twenty or so other oboists in our district. Some of them going to Lower Merion High School and there are a couple more. Christina Barnum

Name: Christina Barnum Occupation: Custodial staff Where (and when) she works: In the Middle School building after school Reason profiled: The staff of The Phoenix Inquirer chose to profile Ms. Barnum as a follow-up to our “Behind the Scenes” article, which discussed members of our community who help us without receiving much recognition. Ms. Barnum’s message for the community: “Everyone should take pride in their community for a better upliftment of the entire city.”

Letter from the FOCUS Editors-in-Chief

by Julia Barr ’15 and Jessica Miller ’15 This spring, FOCUS editors Emilia Weinberg and Peter Dissinger approached the Middle School newspaper, The Phoenix Inquirer, about bringing our two school newspapers together. What began as a workshop coordinated by our soon-departing FOCUS editors resulted in this collaborative issue, created by the staff of both newspapers. More important and memorable for us than the product of this collaboration, however, is the experience and knowledge gained from having worked together. The process of putting together this issue was a learning experience for both middle schoolers and high schoolers in working together as a team, seeing how the other’s newspaper is run, and gaining knowledge and experience to apply to their own newspapers in the future. For us as the new editor-in-chiefs of FOCUS, this was also our first try at publishing an issue, and we are so glad that we were able to share this…

An Open Letter to the FCS Middle School

Editor’s Note: The following letter was written by a student of Friends’ Central Middle School who has chosen to remain anonymous. As always, please maintain respectful conversations, in person and online, in response to this piece.  Dear FCS Middle School, I was a new student this year. I was so excited to make new goals and new friends that would carry on throughout my life. Now when I think about how much progress I made through this year, I am really surprised. Being a middle schooler, it was hard for me in the beginning to make friends. I was basically deciding if I should be myself or someone else. I was always afraid that I was going to fail and get kicked out of the school. My parents would warn me that this school is more serious and that I need to focus on my studies. It built up stress and anxiety…
