Making Every Dollar Count At FCS

Money is essential for modern-day programs in our school, Friends’ Central School. We were curious as to how Friends’ Central has been doing financially, and how it offers the many classes, activities, clubs, and opportunities that it does. We went to speak with Miriam Schaefer who is the head of the Friends’ Central Business Office. She was very gracious in answering all of our questions and ended up talking to us for more than 20 minutes. We found her answers to be insightful, informative, and very interesting. Friends’ Central School has a large budget. The Friends’ Central Annual Report of Gifts includes the revenues collected and the expenses for all of the projects that we fund each year. It includes the costs such as renovating Shallcross and our brand new cafeteria. The school has a lot of other expenses she said and they are primarily the payroll and benefits for…

FCS Fall Sports Recap

The first rotation of sports are over and went very well.  The choices for middle school fall sports were boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, cross country, girls’ tennis, water polo, girls’ field hockey, and flag football. Every day from 2:00 to 3:00 pm everyone was deeply invested in something athletic. Each sport had both home and away games except flag football which plays games within the school. Kyle Brady (8th grade) who did boys’ soccer shared, “The first season is always a great experience, especially for the 6th graders.” With the year just starting it can be hard to get into the flow of having sports. 6th graders and many new students who are learning Friends’ Central’s way of sports handled it exceptionally well. Ms. Crowley stated, “Despite the challenges that were had with the weather, we had a successful fall season of athletics. Looking forward to continued success as we…

Eagles/76ers Update

The Philadelphia 76ers and the Philadelphia Eagles have both started their seasons. The Sixers have not played many games yet, but I have a review of the Sixers’ preseason. I also have a review of the Eagles’ season start so let’s get into it. The 76ers’ first game of the season was a loss to the Boston Celtics. I watched the entire game and from my perspective the Sixers seem to be rusty. The Sixers’ passing game was great, accumulating 18 assists with 8 coming from Ben SImmons. Last season’s Rookie of the Year showed that he had great court vision. The bond of the team was very high, but the SIxers turned the ball over 16 times. However, it is only the first game of the season, I think the Sixers can work their way out of the sloppy play. As for the preseason, the Sixers won three games…

NBA: Cavaliers Trade

The NBA has become very exciting with all of these trades. Players went all over the place and after all of the trades here are the final outcomes. Blake Griffin who was a long time veteran of the Los Angeles Clippers has been traded to the Detroit Pistons. Although this trade was very big, this is not what everyone is talking about. The Cleveland Cavaliers traded away basically all of their team. First, the Cavs traded Dwayne Wade back to the Miami Heat. Second, the Cavs traded Isaiah Thomas to the Los Angeles Lakers for Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. The next part of these trades is where it gets really confusing. The Cavaliers traded Derrick Rose and Jae Crowder to the Utah Jazz in order to acquire Rodney Hood. There was then a three team deal between the Cavaliers, the Utah Jazz, and the Sacramento Kings. The Cavs…

College Football: Brief Bowl Round-up

In college football on January 1st, 2018 it was The Rose Bowl. The game was between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Oklahoma Sooners. It was a close game, it the outcome was Georgia winning by 6 points. Georgia has won 13 games and only lost one. Oklahoma has won 12 and lost two. Georgia went on to the championship against Alabama. Georgia winning by only 6 points in the last game was not enough effort to defeat Alabama. Alabama is now the national champions for a second year in a row. However, Alabama only won by 3 points so a very close game as well. This is Alabama’s 16th official championship.

NBA Update: November

76ers The 76ers seem to be an on/off team. Some nights they can’t seem to make shots and make many mistakes. On other nights they seem to make many shots and have very great ball movement. On a few games they have won by very small margins. The 76ers aren’t a bad team, and they aren’t a good team. It is very hard to predict what they will do next. The 76ers do have some good players in Ben Simmons, Markelle Fultz, and Joel Embiid. The only problem is Ben and Markelle are rookies. Defending Champions The Golden State Warriors recently lost to the Memphis grizzlies 110 – 101. This game was another stunning loss. In the fourth quarter the referee didn’t call something that Steph Curry wanted him to call. Kevin Durant went on to yell at the ref and Steph Curry threw his mouthpiece. Both of these players…

NBA Update

The NBA season just started in October, and started with a very bad injury. The first game of the season was Cleveland Cavaliers vs. the Boston Celtics. The power forward for the Boston Celtics named Gordon Hayward suffered a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia. The final score of this game was 102 – 99. The Cavaliers went on to win the game. This game was a lot bigger than it seemed. Kyrie Irving was just traded from the Cavaliers to the Celtics. Lebron James was great friends with Kyrie. Lebron and Kyrie were on the same court for the first time in awhile. They were the biggest dynamic duo since Shaq and Kobe Bryant, until a series of events between Kyrie and LeBron that made Kyrie leave the Cavs. Kyrie got traded to the Celtics and went on to say, “I don’t care what people think.” In other news the…
