Making Every Dollar Count At FCS

Money is essential for modern-day programs in our school, Friends’ Central School. We were curious as to how Friends’ Central has been doing financially, and how it offers the many classes, activities, clubs, and opportunities that it does. We went to speak with Miriam Schaefer who is the head of the Friends’ Central Business Office. She was very gracious in answering all of our questions and ended up talking to us for more than 20 minutes. We found her answers to be insightful, informative, and very interesting. Friends’ Central School has a large budget. The Friends’ Central Annual Report of Gifts includes the revenues collected and the expenses for all of the projects that we fund each year. It includes the costs such as renovating Shallcross and our brand new cafeteria. The school has a lot of other expenses she said and they are primarily the payroll and benefits for…

Friends’ Central Sound-Off: Kavanaugh Confirmation

On October 6, 2018, Justice Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court with a very partisan vote. Mr. Brett Michael Kavanagh was born in February of 1965 making him 53 years of age. Before being nominated, Justice Kavanaugh was a United States Circuit Judge. Kavanaugh´s confirmation started in early September and, towards the end, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford stepped forward with assault allegations that happened thirty-six years prior. At Friends’ Central there are very strong feelings. When asking the Rosemont Village Service group for their opinions there were many strong ones. Magistra (Latin teacher) said, ¨it was incredibly distressing to watch the hearing and to see the obvious pain of the women who had been violated and sidelined. When someone comes to me and expresses their pain I do not doubt them. I believe them.¨ Allison Whellan ´23 stated,¨It was really upsetting especially as a girl to watch a…

Elon Musk Resigns

Elon Musk, Tesla´s famed founder, CEO, and previous chairman resigned as chairman after a series of incidents that made bad press. A common question is what is the difference between a CEO (chief executive officer) and a chairman? Before you read forward you should understand the difference between a CEO and a chairman. In a review, a CEO is the face of the company and ensures the company’s efficiency and stability. A chairman is more concerned with pleasing the stockholders, and focuses more on counseling. The resignation was triggered by many issues adding up and in the end a lawsuit about fraud. Weeks ago Musk started talking about making Tesla private; he raised the stock prices in hopes people would sell their shares and he could but them back. Two weeks ago, Elon Musk was legally smoking marijuana. Although it was legal, the backlash was still major. Share prices dropped…

Trump At The UN

Since the late twentieth century the office of the President of the United States has been respected. Throughout the world the American presidency and democracy was a sign of hope and most countries respected the person in that office. On the 25th of September that changed. The leader of the free world was met with an outburst of laughter at the United Nations General Assembly meeting after stating, ¨In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country.¨ He then followed up by saying, ¨so true.¨ The president was talking to the U.N about the change there has been in the world, how with short conversations the North Koreans they have made ¨encouraging measures that few could have imagined.” He mentioned how India has made strong moves to diminish poverty. While these accomplishments are great, President Trump phrased them in…

Hawaii’s Eruptive Emergency

After the eruption of Kilauea on Maui, Hawaii’s biggest island, on May 3rd, residents have found the outcome intense. The US Geological Survey issued a red alert, meaning that a large eruption is imminent. The largest crater is launching ash into the air. But ash isn’t the biggest problem residents face. Sulfur Dioxide, a highly poisonous gas, is leaking out of the twenty one fissures in the ground. Authorities warn that if you feel even slightly affected by the gas, you should leave the area and seek medical help. Symptoms may include runny nose, coughing, and burning eyes. Ensure you get help quickly, because it can result in choking. Then, there is the lava. Although it is very slow, it is still extremely dangerous. Lava is currently spewing out of two fissures and can be launched over 100 feet in the air. Another concern is the water eruptions. When the…

State of the Union

On Tuesday, January 30, POTUS Donald Trump delivered his State of The Union address. He delivered his speech beautifully and paused at the perfect times making his speech very dramatic and interesting. He brought national heroes and people of great accomplishments to his speech. Making it a touching speech showing heroics and heartfelt messages. He had a very controlled tone making him appear calm and peaceful. He also delivered a very bi-partisan message that even the democrats applauded. Things quickly fell apart though when he finished his introduction. Donald Trump lied fourteen times within an hour and half speech; the most any president has lied during any State of the Union speech.. He got boos from grown congressman that acted as though they were watching Riley trying to shoot a basketball. If you put away the fact that many of Trump’s points were lies, he had an excellent speech. When…

This year they got $240,000. At Friends’ Central, Magistra, her daughter Annie and Dr. Scapik are running the program. Magistra sent an email to the teachers. It goes as follows: “The MANNA pie sale touches close to home for my family as MANNA started in my church kitchen in the 1980s as a result of a sermon my dad preached not long before he died. FCS leads schools in the area in our Thanksgiving pie sales. We are already up to 106 pies sold with a goal of 169.” In an interview with Dr. Scapik she said: “We have…
