Areoflot Sukohi Superjet 100 Crash

On May 5, 2019, a Sukhoi Superjet 100 operated by Russia’s Aeroflot burst into flames on impact with the runway. 41 people were confirmed dead. The plane took off from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport for Murmansk, Russia. On the initial climb, the plane was struck by lightning and requested a return to the airport. The controllers cleared the plane for an emergency landing. The plane circled the airport twice before initiating the final approach. The plane landed hard and the tail section promptly burst into flames. This most likely happened because the skin of the airplane was still electrically charged when the plane landed. This happened because when the electricity had a path to the ground, it passed the metal fuel tanks and ignited the fuel. The plane then skidded down the runway and spun 165 degrees. Emergency slides extended but for several seconds no one got out. This is peculiar…

The Unlikely Spy

Animals have been used in the business of war for centuries, with obvious examples like horse riding and trained search and rescue dogs. But there are some not so obvious examples, like military marine animals. We will do a deep dive into weaponized animals in this article. Dolphins, lionfish, and seals have all been used in various military purposes. Dolphins, the most obvious example, have been used as underwater mine detectors, frogmen (underwater divers) attackers, and explosives carriers. Seals have been used for the same purposes.  Lionfish were attempted to be trained to seek out German U Boats, but the problem was they just chased fish and meandered about. Weapon carrying dolphins have been a hit with the Soviet Union and Russia, as they would strap explosives to dolphins and train them to hunt boats, except they used their own boats for the training, leading to the dolphins tracking down…

The First Manned Mission to Launch Off of American Soil Since 2011

On July 8, 2011, the Atlantis space shuttle took off for its last flight, as the last space launch on American soil, and on July 21, the space age hit a crossroads. Ever since, America has been launching astronauts to the I.S.S. (International Space Station) with the help of Russia, using their rockets. Then in 2017, SpaceX was elected to build a spacecraft to carry astronauts to the I.S.S. , so what the catch? This shuttle will be launched off of American soil from the Kennedy Space Center for the first time in eight years. Tests had happened, an unmanned test flight had succeeded and the crew dragon capsule had safely landed in the Atlantic Ocean. And on March 3, the mission, manned by  Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, successfully docked with the I.S.S. . On March 8, they undocked and completed their splash down. This was a big feat…

Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha Visits FCS!

We as a full FCS community had the honor of hosting Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, whose research helped expose the Flint water crisis. She was here for the public on Tuesday, October 30th at 6:30 pm at Friends Central School, Shallcross Hall at the City Avenue campus. But the students were lucky enough to meet her in person. She will met with the Lower School, Middle School, and the Upper School during their assembly periods. Dr. Hanna-Attisha also wrote a well-reviewed book called What the Eyes Don’t See about helping discover the Flint water crisis. The Flint crisis started when the city of Flint was losing money. So Flint switched from Detroit water to water from the Flint river. But river water is harder to treat than lake water and this treatment was being done by a water plant that had not been operational for 40 or 50 years. The problem…

Carson Wentz Returns

Carson Wentz returned to playing in the Eagles’ home game on Sunday, September 23rd to send them off with a win. What will the Eagles do with the quarterback on the field again? Wentz was out for most of last season after he tore his ACL. FCS student Elio Spagnuolo said that he was very happy and excited about Wentz’s return. The Eagles played a game against the Tennessee Titans and lost in overtime, which is a big surprise. History teacher Mr. Chagan said that he was optimistic and extremely happy about the return, but he admitted that there are still many problems with the Eagles including many injuries and the offensive line needs more practice. He also surprised me by saying that if back-up quarterback Nate Sudfeld had to come in to the game at some point he thought that Sudfeld is an upgrade from Nick Foles athletically because…
