Musicals are enchanting, with their singing and dancing and high-energy flare. They make more money than you can shake a stick at and steal the Broadway spotlight. Unfortunately, they steal this spotlight from the smaller, shorter, and, quite frankly, simpler plays. I think this is a sad occurrence, because there are some really funny, really touching, and really moving plays on Broadway, and I think they deserve to be known. The following are, in my opinion, the best plays on Broadway (and off of it.)
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime
Off-Broadway (Tickets for Shows at the Kimmel Center)
Based off the novel by the same name, this tells a touching story of an autistic teenage boy who is trying to find his mother. I strongly recommend this play, however, it does curse once in a while and handles some difficult themes for young children.
Present Laughter
Broadway
Present Laughter is a hilarious comedy written by Noël Coward in 1939. The play, however, has returned to Broadway along with actor Kelvin Kline. The play is about a self-indulgent actor and his adventures with people such as his ex-wife, his manager, and an aspiring playwright. It is a comedy that will leave the audience with their sides aching of laughter.
Arthur Miller’s The Price
Broadway
This is a touching story about the struggle of a young boy in the Great Depression trying to create hope for his family’s future. The play is sad, exciting, riveting, and a great piece of artwork that needs to be seen.
The Play That Goes Wrong
Broadway
This show is about a play within a play. Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, a traveling troupe of actors, are attempting to put on a murder-mystery show that takes place in the Roaring 20’s. Long story short, it doesn’t go well. This comedy gives the audience a lot of material to laugh at and is extremely entertaining.
Shear Madness
Off-Broadway
I saw this play a while back and I actually knew someone who used to perform it. This show was one of the greatest pieces of comedy I’ve ever seen. It’s half scripted, half improvised, and all wonderfully incredible. The story is interesting and hilarious and I was so sad when it was over. Basically, see it!
