Splatoon Review

Hey everyone this is gonna be my first game review. I’m going to do a lot of these, so I’ll familiarize you with how I’m gonna do this. First I’ll do 10-star ratings for gameplay, plot, design, soundtrack, and creativity. Then I’ll do my review, followed by some pics, tips, and finally some info about the game director and stuff. At the end, I will give the game a final rating out of 100. Last, I want to tell you that this is in my opinion so if you hated the game, that’s okay. And my first game review will be…

Released on May 28, 2015, Splatoon already seemed amazing when first revealed at E3 2014. Appearing in multiple Nintendo Directs, many were excited. The game features humanoid squids called “Inklings” who play “Turf Wars,” four-on-four online paintball fights. You can level up and shop for gear, as well as play local multiplayer, where you and a friend can play against each other, popping balloons. There’s also a single player campaign featuring Cap’n Cuttlefish, an old Inkling who asks you to save the great Zapfish from the evil Octarians. The game also is compatible with Nintendo’s Amiibo. All three modes use a main weapon, consisting of either a standard shooter, chargeable sniper, overpowered roller, short-burst blaster, a slosher that splashes foes, or a splatling, which is like a gatling gun. Then, there’s your sub, like a bomb or beacon, and finally, a special attack that charges over time. Each weapon is pre-set with their main, sub, and special.

Most gamers spend their time killing other Inklings, but it only benefits by spreading a little ink and holding off the other team for a bit. The goal of Turf Wars is for your team to spread the most ink in three minutes. There are five-minute ranked battles as well, but gamers need to be at least at Level 10 to participate. The ranked battle modes are “Splat Zones – Take control of both zones for 100 seconds,” “Rainmaker – Bring the overpowered weapon The Rainmaker to the finish area,” and my personal favorite, “Tower Control – Ride the tower to your finish area.” Win, and you’ll get almost twice the average Turf War XP, as well as a rank bonus, but lose, and you’ll get nothing other than a rank decrease. You start out at Rank C, but you can get to A+.

A cool feature of Splatoon is Splatfest, a special event that happens every few weeks. In Splatfest, you choose a side (for example, Cats vs. Dogs) and fight each other for special items called Super Sea Snails. For example, Team Art, which I chose, defeated Team Science, so I got a lot of good stuff. If I chose Team Science, though, I wouldn’t benefit as much. You start out as a (Team) Fanboy/Fangirl, then a (Team) Fiend, then the (Team) Defender, a strong (Team) Champion, and finally, you can be a (Team) King/Queen. The stages are normally named after underwater creatures: Saltspray Rig, an oil rig stage; Walleye Warehouse, a warehouse course; Urchin Underpass, the main arena; Arowana Mall, a good stage for rollers; and Blackbelly Skatepark, a hectic fight-for-the-middle. There’s also Port Mackerel, Hammerhead Bridge, Moray Towers, Kelp Dome, Bluefin Depot, Flounder Heights, and my favorite, Camp Triggerfish. Before I switch gears, I want to inform you about the soundtrack. Splatoon’s songs are G-R-E-A-T! However, there only being a small amount of songs, it’s a fair argument to say that the game doesn’t have much of a soundtrack. I say that it should be considered one, which is why I gave it 9/10. So now, let’s show some cool photos!

TIPS

  • Don’t shoot up walls unless you need to climb. It doesn’t add any paint to your total.
  • Don’t spend your time killing others or guarding one area.
  • As cool as some outfits may look, go for the ones with good upgrades. Click here for the corresponding symbols.
  • In ranked battles, especially Tower Control, specials like Inkstrike are game-changers.
  • Strong weapons are the Octobrush, N-Zap ‘89, and Aerospray RG.
  • Finally, teamwork is important. Never quit mid-game, for then your team will be down a player.
