As many of you know the Avengers: Infinity War trailer dropped recently, and the hype has been HUGE. This is not going to be a review article but an article on the biggest question in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)… where are the Infinity Stones? There are six Stones, the Mind Gem, Soul Gem, Space Gem, Reality Stone, Power Stone, Time Gem. Today I will be going over the known locations of the Infinity Stones.
Let’s start with the Space Stone. The Space Stone is inside the Tesseract. We first see it in the post credit scene of Thor and then fully in Captain America: The First Avenger and in many subsequent MCU movies . With the ability to generate wormholes, it allows species to travel huge distances in an instant. Loki uses the Tesseract to unleash the Chitauri in New York in The Avengers. This event is known as the Battle of New York, but it is also sometimes referred to as “the Incident.”
Current whereabouts: Since The Avengers, the Tesseract was kept in Odin’s vault on Asgard. It was speculated that Loki took the Tesseract due to a scene in Thor: Ragnarok, this was later confirmed in the Infinity War trailer
Next is the Mind Stone. The space stone was originally in Loki’s scepter, then moved into Vision’s forehead by Ultron. We see it in Avengers, and Avengers: Age of Ultron and is subsequent films. It is capable of controlling minds and enhancing intelligence, Thanos gives the Mind Stone to Loki to wield in his scepter to build an army in The Avengers. After Loki’s defeat, his scepter falls into the hands of Hydra commander Baron Wolfgang von Strucker. Who uses it for human experimentation, where he turns two poor Sokovian siblings into Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
Throughout the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor fuses the Mind Stone into Tony Stark’s A.I. assistant, J.A.R.V.I.S., to create Vision.
Current whereabouts: It is in the forehead of Vision, who is still an active Avenger under the command of Tony Stark at the end of Captain America: Civil War.
We keep going to the Reality Stone. We only see it in Thor: The Dark World in the form of the liquid Aether. Turned into weapon by Malekith, the Reality Stone is able to return the universe to its pre-Big Bang state.
Current whereabouts: Knowing of its horrific power, the Asgardians gave the Aether to the Collector in the post-credits scene of Thor: The Dark World. The Asgardians trusted the Collector to keep it separate from the Tesseract on their world, knowing it can be dangerous keeping as much as two Infinity Stones together on one planet. As far as anyone knows, it’s still with the Collector in his ruined home on Knowhere.
Next we have the Power Stone. We only see it in the Guardians of the Galaxy. It is located in an orb, stolen be Peter Quill to give to the Ravagers. As demonstrated when it was used by Star-Lord to kill Ronan the Accuser, the Power Stone is nothing but raw power and can destroy whole civilizations, let alone the Kree warlord.
Current whereabouts: Star-Lord unknowingly salvaged the Power Stone contained in an “orb” at the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy. Upon learning of its power, the Guardians kept it from Ronan, and it’s now safe on Xandar with the Nova Corps, the military police of the Nova Empire.
Then finally the last known gem is the Time Stone. It is located in the Eye of Agomotto, Used by Doctor Strange, to create a time-loop to destroy Dormammu, the Time Stone can alter and manipulate time.
Current whereabouts: Under custody of the Masters of the Mystic Arts (namely Wong) at Kamar-Taj in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Last there is one stone that we don’t know the location of, the Soul Stone, it was rumored to be in Thor: Ragnarok but sadly there was no such luck. Now it is rumored to be in the Black Panther movie in the possession of the Wakandans.
In the comics, the Soul Gem can steal, control, and alter the souls of the living and the dead. It might even be able to control all life in the universe if the films behave like the comics do. To our knowledge, nobody in the known MCU has possession the Soul Stone, yet.
