What’s Happening in the White House?: Weeks 6 and 7

Hi again, Dylan and Riley here, and this is our sixth and seventh week working on “What’s Happening in the White House?”. Thank you for all your support; we will be continuing this regular column until the end of the year. In the past two weeks, Mr. Trump has signed the new travel ban, ACA /“Trumpcare.” Last Tuesday, President Trump signed his most recent executive order, the new travel ban. It is a lot like the last one but Iraq is off the list. It is in effect for 90 days again. It is still receiving a TON of backlash. It will not come into effect until March 19. The populace is referring to the Affordable Care Act replacement as “Trumpcare.” The White House has been trying to suppress this name, and they are calling it “the ACA replacement.” This bill is being used to replace the ACA, more commonly…

What’s Happening in the White House?: Weeks 4 and 5

Hi, I’m Dylan with Riley here and this is our fourth and fifth week following “What’s Happening in the White House?”. Thank you for all your support; we will be continuing this regular column until the end of the year. In the past two weeks, President Trump has accused Sweden of terrorism and is costing the American people more is security than Obama did in his first term. We will also cover his speeches at CPAC and to Congress. According to CNN and ABC, the New York Police Department says it spends $500,000 a day just to protect the President’s residence at Trump Tower. President Trump’s travel to Mar-a-Lago have cost $10 million in travel and security. Eric and Don Jr. are in Dubai, Melania and Barron are in New York, Ivanka is traveling, and the President is in D.C. They all receive a security detail, costing the American people millions of tax dollars.       President Trump…

What’s Happening in the White House?: The Last Two Weeks

Hi, I’m Dylan with Riley here and these are the things President Trump has done in the past two weeks. He has greenlighted the Dakota Access Pipeline, started planning how to build the wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, and started to dismantle Obamacare. Michael Flynn’s resignation and the Trump campaign’s contact with Russian intelligence during the election have been in the news this week. Last Week Trump signed three executive orders to benefit oil pipelines and remove Obama’s environmental protections. The Dakota Access bill says that the pipeline is “90 percent complete,” and only needs to get the permits and government approval to “construct and operate the DAPL, including easements or rights-of-way to cross federal areas.” Trump also signed an order demanding that the Secretary of Commerce make a plan ensuring all pipelines are make of U.S. iron and steel. There are “yuge” questions about what the orders will actually mean,…

What’s Happening in the White House?: Weekend Order and Supreme Court Nominee

Hi, I’m Dylan and I am starting a column on what President Trump has been been doing in the White House during the past week. Two things that Trump has done in the past week have been his nomination of a Supreme Court Justice to fill Justice Scalia’s vacated position and his Executive Order on immigration.     Yesterday, January 31, President Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court Justice position. Gorsuch is known for his firm conservative views, and he could tip the court’s balance on hot-button issues like abortion, voting rights and religious freedom. Gorsuch is 49 years old, making him the youngest Supreme Court nominee in 25 years. He was among a group of federal judges reported in recent weeks to be on Trump’s shortlist.  Gorsuch, a Colorado native, is popular among most Republicans. This past weekend, President Trump has jumped right into controversy with an Executive Order on immigration and refugees. He…

Han Solo: A Backstory

Princess Leia: “I love you.” Han Solo: “I know.” Han Solo, Jabba the Hutt’s most infamous smuggler, the rebel alliance’s most famous general, going up against foes like Boba Fett ( see Riley’s article for more info on him) and Greedo… But do you really know about him? So here I come in, Dylan, to tell you about the Galaxy’s smuggler turned general. Han Solo was born on the planet Corellia during the waning years of the Galactic Republic. His parents gave him up at a young age, and turned to a life of crime as a thief in order to survive the perils of the galaxy. Solo, at some point, acquired a starship and became an exceptional pilot. Solo began working outside of the Galactic Empire’s laws, beginning a career in smuggling. Solo eventually met the Wookiee Chewbacca, whom he saved from imprisonment. Chewbacca, grateful for Solo’s intervention,…
