Journaling Judgements

I have always loved notebooks. I’m the kind of person to get a notebook, fill up five pages, and then subsequently forget about it and buy a new one. After a while, I accumulated quite a large stack of empty journals with no real reason for owning them. So, I gave myself a reason. I made one a journal, dedicated one to taking notes, made one into a journal-share (more on that later), and filled one with poetry. I still have more waiting to be used, but I’m planning on finishing these before I move on. Journaling is one of the most relaxing activities I’ve ever taken part in, and I’m honestly frustrated I haven’t stuck with it previously. Not only is it therapeutic, it’s hilarious. My eighth grade self is whiny and angsty, and re-reading all of those teenage thoughts is like watching a comedy show featuring the world’s…

MS Play Preview: The Phantom Tollbooth

Tuesday, January 16 was the first official rehearsal of the Middle School Drama production The Phantom Tollbooth. The Phantom Tollbooth was originally a book written by Norton Juster which was then produced into a movie by director Chuck Jones and  finally turned into the play the Middle School is doing by Susan Nanus. The plot of the story goes as follows: There is a boy named Milo (played by Alex Rice). Milo wastes his time and pretty much does nothing. That is until a huge box shows up in his room and takes him into the world beyond. There he meets his best friend Tock (played by Dev Gupta). Tock is a watchdog that loves automobile rides. There are two kingdoms inside of the “Land of Wisdom”, Dictionopolis and Digitopolis. On the way to the Kingdom of Dictionopolis the story of Sweet Rhyme (Milan Goyle) and Pure Reason (Gemma Kent)…

The Flupocalypse

The winter, with its bitter cold and biting winds, has procured yet another unpleasant threat to our well-being. A flu virus has been spreading quickly from person to person, leading to profuse illness, and, on occasion, even death. Fear not, however! The virus has not greatly affected our school, and Mr. Kennedy, the Upper School Principal, states that, “We’re strong, we will persevere, we are not panicked.” About 5% of the middle school student body has come down with the flupocaplypse, while only 4% of the upper school has fallen prey to the epidemic’s wrath. Two upper school teachers have been absent, while no middle school teachers have missed school as a result of the flu. Teachers and kids have been out more than normal in the upper school, though the extent of absences has been about what one would suspect for this time of year. When approached by us,…

State of the Union

On Tuesday, January 30, POTUS Donald Trump delivered his State of The Union address. He delivered his speech beautifully and paused at the perfect times making his speech very dramatic and interesting. He brought national heroes and people of great accomplishments to his speech. Making it a touching speech showing heroics and heartfelt messages. He had a very controlled tone making him appear calm and peaceful. He also delivered a very bi-partisan message that even the democrats applauded. Things quickly fell apart though when he finished his introduction. Donald Trump lied fourteen times within an hour and half speech; the most any president has lied during any State of the Union speech.. He got boos from grown congressman that acted as though they were watching Riley trying to shoot a basketball. If you put away the fact that many of Trump’s points were lies, he had an excellent speech. When…

Stranger Things: Season Two Episode Five

Hey everyone, I’m Luke and I will be continuing our Stranger Things series, reviewing Season 2 Episode 5, “Dig Dug.” I think that the episode did a great job of switching between storylines, as well as giving as an intense cliffhanger at the end. I’m going to give a disclaimer that the rest of this review will include spoilers. I truly believe that a show like Stranger Things is best experienced without prior knowledge. Ready? Alright, let’s start the synopsis. We left off with Hopper discovering an underground tunnel. Episode 5 starts off with Joyce trying to call Hopper, without success. While Joyce and Mike try to connect Will’s drawings, Will says that he feels what the shadow monster is feeling. Mike tells Will that Will can be like a spy, but Will feels that the monster can spy on them. We cut back to Hopper, who is exploring the…

Super Bowl 2018 Preview

The Eagles have made it all the way to the Super Bowl for the first time in 14 years. In 2004 when the eagles last went to the Super Bowl they beat the Vikings then the Falcons and went on to face the Patriots. Nearly the exact same thing has happened this year is history repeating itself? We don’t want history to repeat itself exactly because in 2004 we ended up losing to the patriots. We hope to have a winning outcome this year. This year the Eagles have faced the Falcons, then the Vikings and are now going to fight the Patriots in a true showdown. In my opinion, I believe that the Eagles win based on there great defense and how they are riding off their title of Underdog. Amazon’s Alexa even agrees that the Eagles will fly to victory and I like its opinion. Las Vega and…

The Rise and Fall of Luna

On January 8th, 2018, a dear friend passed away. Luna, otherwise known as “the blue parakeet,” was found dead on that Monday, outside of his cage. It was hypothesized that the cause of death may have been a broken neck, but Dr. Zaradic, the birds’ owner, stated, “I do not believe that’s the case.” As of now, all that is known is that the birds escaped through a hole in the cage and Luna died sometime afterwards. He was a companion to middle school students, faculty and animals alike, specifically Sol, also known as Bob or “the yellow parakeet.” Sol and Luna shared a cage, but they also shared adventures. Even on the final expedition, Sol was with Luna until he died. Some students are very upset about Luna’s death, for example, Fotini Mourelatos, ‘22. Fotini was one of the birds’ primary caretakers, and often cleaned the water and food…
