What Plans Do People Have For This Summer?

As the summer approaches I thought it would be nice to see what people have planned. Are they excited? Are they traveling? Are they seeing relatives? So I interviewed a few faculty members and a student, asking them, simply, “what plans do you have?” Here are the results.   Mrs. EB (History Teacher) So this summer I’ll actually be working at a summer camp all summer in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. It’s a Jewish summer camp and I’m one of the camp moms so I check in with people, make sure they’re okay. I check in with the parents, make sure they’re okay without their kids at home and so in general, I take care of people and enjoy the outdoors.   Timia Jones ‘25 I’m going to go to Vegas and spend summer with my aunt and my uncle and my cousins because I don’t really see them often.   Ms….

The Issue With ID Cards

Last year Friends’ Central installed ID card scanners on almost every door on the campus. This was just the first step in their new student ID card system. Each student has their own personalized ID card which includes their name and face. These cards have become a source of stress for a lot of students and staff. For the students, this stress comes from the constant loss of their ID cards and worries that they may pay up to the required monetary fine to get a new card.. For the staff the stress derives from the students always losing their cards, and are often forced to perform various tasks to make up for what would usually be activated by a simple swipe of a card. They are forced to take hours away from their lives searching up students names and hearing annoying bells. We decided to interview them ourselves to…

Was Fun Night Fun?

The fun night took place at Friends Central School on May 3rd. Fun night lasted from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. There was a water ice truck with many many flavors. There wasa dance floor with music from students’ choices. There were video games (Super Smash Bros) and board games (Scrabble, Monopoly, Sorry, etc). There was lots of food for the hungry party people. There was the movie Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse. According to IMDb, the movie has this description: “Teenage Miles Morales becomes Spider-Man of his reality, crossing his path with five counterparts from another dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.”   FCS students’ reviews of Fun Night: Konrad Smith 23’: “=Fun Night was fun. The only reason fun night was not that fun was because they stopped the movie in the middle. Otherwise everything was fun, especially the Smash tournament.   Isaac Dubb 24’:…

What is 8th Grade Showcase?

At the end of your middle school career, every student is required to do 8th grade showcase, so… what is it?  This is the question I along with a majority of students have asked in the past and I will answer it for you. Showcase is supposed to be a presentation for students to “showcase” skills that  not only things that others may not know about you, but also describe you as a person. Usual things that students like to showcase are: singing, dancing, sports, cooking, making movies, and other talents and interests. Showcase should be thought about and worked on for a long time. Every student is given five months to work on it, although it is not a bad idea to start before; it can be a stressful process.     Here are a few ideas that some 8th Graders are doing this year:   Kyle Brady and…

The FCS March Madness Connection

The third most voted for team at Friends’ Central was Tennessee. These three…

FCS Winter Sports Round-Up

The winter sports season went very well and offered many different opportunities. The choices for winter sports this year were boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, boys’ squash, girls’ squash, dance, and swimming. There were not many cancelled games, and the weather was on our side. Michelle Crowley, the director of athletics and wellness had this to say about the winter sports season: “Generally speaking I am ready to go outside in the spring. In my opinion the winter season seems very long, but all of our winter teams have done very well in this growth period. The winter sports season in the end went very well.” The main thought expressed by middle school students was that they want to continue the sport they chose for the winter in their future sport careers. In terms of eighth grade, most students are thinking about the transition from middle school sports to high school…

FCS Waffles! Which is better?

The FCS waffle machine is a new edition to the cafeteria and everyone’s wondering which flavor of waffle to choose. Now, you may be confused, thinking, “Flavored waffles? What’s this?” Well, before you put your waffle mixture into the machine, you’re given a choice of flavor. Today we are going to see which one is considered better in students’ opinions, as well as our personal opinions on the two.   First off, here are some opinions by students who have used the waffle machine recently: Theo Schenck ‘24– “The normal waffle because that is what I ate yesterday. It’s easier to put toppings on (as well).” Theo Dankoff ‘24– “Normal, because it tastes better and has a better consistency.” Myles Roche ‘24 – “Normal. Strawberry is a really bad flavor to have in a waffle. It doesn’t go great to go with a waffle.” Lyle Goldader ‘24 – “When it…

FCS Fall Sports Recap

The first rotation of sports are over and went very well.  The choices for middle school fall sports were boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, cross country, girls’ tennis, water polo, girls’ field hockey, and flag football. Every day from 2:00 to 3:00 pm everyone was deeply invested in something athletic. Each sport had both home and away games except flag football which plays games within the school. Kyle Brady (8th grade) who did boys’ soccer shared, “The first season is always a great experience, especially for the 6th graders.” With the year just starting it can be hard to get into the flow of having sports. 6th graders and many new students who are learning Friends’ Central’s way of sports handled it exceptionally well. Ms. Crowley stated, “Despite the challenges that were had with the weather, we had a successful fall season of athletics. Looking forward to continued success as we…

Staying Healthy This Fall and Winter!

The change in weather usually brings on an increase of colds and sickness. FCS is no exception. Our Middle School has been experiencing a sudden wave of sickness ranging from a mild cough to the flu. Alex Rice ‘23 was recently sick and he said it affected his athletic performance.   Sickness has a lot of impact. It causes school absences, missed sports games not to mention the just feeling awful part. And then there is all of the work you have to make up once you get back to school. Lucky for us there are some things we can do to help prevent getting sick this fall. You can try to get a flu shot to prevent sickness before it even happens, Try to avoid coming in contact with sick people because the flu and colds spread really easily, If you are sick you should stay at home to…

Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha Visits FCS!

We as a full FCS community had the honor of hosting Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, whose research helped expose the Flint water crisis. She was here for the public on Tuesday, October 30th at 6:30 pm at Friends Central School, Shallcross Hall at the City Avenue campus. But the students were lucky enough to meet her in person. She will met with the Lower School, Middle School, and the Upper School during their assembly periods. Dr. Hanna-Attisha also wrote a well-reviewed book called What the Eyes Don’t See about helping discover the Flint water crisis. The Flint crisis started when the city of Flint was losing money. So Flint switched from Detroit water to water from the Flint river. But river water is harder to treat than lake water and this treatment was being done by a water plant that had not been operational for 40 or 50 years. The problem…
