Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha Visits FCS!

We as a full FCS community had the honor of hosting Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, whose research helped expose the Flint water crisis. She was here for the public on Tuesday, October 30th at 6:30 pm at Friends Central School, Shallcross Hall at the City Avenue campus. But the students were lucky enough to meet her in person. She will met with the Lower School, Middle School, and the Upper School during their assembly periods. Dr. Hanna-Attisha also wrote a well-reviewed book called What the Eyes Don’t See about helping discover the Flint water crisis. The Flint crisis started when the city of Flint was losing money. So Flint switched from Detroit water to water from the Flint river. But river water is harder to treat than lake water and this treatment was being done by a water plant that had not been operational for 40 or 50 years. The problem…

Stream Data: An Ad for 8th Graders

Stream Data: Ad for 8th Graders Something you should know about the stream data project due on 11/16/18 8th graders. I know many of you are stressed about the stream data website project due 11/16. If you are interested in extra credit on the project, you can get “Up to 10 points for publishing some aspect of your project in FCS Just the Facts or the Phoenix Inquirer (the middle school newspaper)”. If you would like to add an aspect of your project to the newspaper for 10 points (almost 2 pages worth of points) Please email me at kbrady@friendscentral.org. Middle School Water Polo: Embracing the Loss

It is fair to say that until recently the middle school water polo team was not having a great season. Game after game we lost. There was only one place to go and that was up. It would have been easy to give up, and it was tempting on the bus ride home after our third, fourth, fifth loss in a row. But amazingly enough the losses didn’t make us miserable. As a team we may not have been winning but we were still having fun. Coach Anderson brought us donuts after a rough game against Penn Charter. Even when losing we laughed a lot. Like the day Avner Schwartz ‘25 pulled a snack size ziplock bag out of his swim locker with his speedo easily folder inside and said, “we shouldn’t be forced to wear something that can fit inside a potato chip snack bag.” and we all burst…

Eagles/76ers Update

The Philadelphia 76ers and the Philadelphia Eagles have both started their seasons. The Sixers have not played many games yet, but I have a review of the Sixers’ preseason. I also have a review of the Eagles’ season start so let’s get into it. The 76ers’ first game of the season was a loss to the Boston Celtics. I watched the entire game and from my perspective the Sixers seem to be rusty. The Sixers’ passing game was great, accumulating 18 assists with 8 coming from Ben SImmons. Last season’s Rookie of the Year showed that he had great court vision. The bond of the team was very high, but the SIxers turned the ball over 16 times. However, it is only the first game of the season, I think the Sixers can work their way out of the sloppy play. As for the preseason, the Sixers won three games…

What is Cardlife?

Cardlife is a game based on the idea of a world made of cardboard. The grass, the trees, the monsters, even the player’s character is made out of cardboard. Cardlife is a survival game with dryads, goblins, bears, wolves, dinosaurs, robots and even more. The game is still in early access so many things are still missing or glitchy, but even so, what the game currently has is amazing. The crafting system is especially unique, if you want to craft a sword, you get the materials and draw your sword in the cardboard. 100 people could have completely different, custom swords, and–guess what?–everything is like this. You can even draw your bed and armor, your doors and signs, everything is custom made by the character. This allows for a whole new level of creativity. Friends’ Central Sound-Off: Kavanaugh Confirmation

On October 6, 2018, Justice Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court with a very partisan vote. Mr. Brett Michael Kavanagh was born in February of 1965 making him 53 years of age. Before being nominated, Justice Kavanaugh was a United States Circuit Judge. Kavanaugh´s confirmation started in early September and, towards the end, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford stepped forward with assault allegations that happened thirty-six years prior. At Friends’ Central there are very strong feelings. When asking the Rosemont Village Service group for their opinions there were many strong ones. Magistra (Latin teacher) said, ¨it was incredibly distressing to watch the hearing and to see the obvious pain of the women who had been violated and sidelined. Today I’m going to be talking about Chromebooks and iPads, Which one is better? Well I asked 35 people at FCS and here are the results. Chromebooks: 9 iPads: 26 So as you can see most people prefer iPads. Pokémon Let’s Go Review

Pokémon is a wonderful series of games with inventive villains, a wide variety of Pokémon with several generations of them, and epic battles against wild Pokémon. Pokémon Lets Go! has none of that. The villains are Jessie and James, some of the worst characters in the anime. They just want to steal Pikachu for 98% of the episodes with some terrible disguise and giant elaborate machine. The wide expanse of Pokémon has so far been shown to have all generation-1 Pokémon with Alolan forms, megas, and hopefully shinies. And worst of all there is no wild Pokémon battles. None at all. All you do is throw pokéballs at them like in Pokémon Go. The battles against trainers are lackluster and the game has the mass EXP share which makes it way too easy. 8th Grade D. C. Trip

On Sunday, September 30th, the eighth grade left for our annual Washington D.C. trip. This trip included the new African American History & Culture Museum. The trip had a lot of build-up, especially about the lobbying opportunity to talk to our senators and congressmen about two issues: climate change and gun control. Two issues that are very relevant in today’s politics especially with millennials. But I wanted to know what other 8th graders in FCS thought of DC. Devlin Kolimago in eighth grade said that it was “fun and tiring, we had to walk a lot and the food was good just expensive.” “Lobbying was good and fun but it wasn’t arguing, it was more of agreeing.” Next I asked Dev Gupta, also in eighth grade.
