Hi, Dylan here! As many of you know, and are readily waiting for, Halloween is around the corner. Many of us will be going around and stealing candy from people’s doors while dressed up as inflatable dinosaurs. Aside from this fun, Halloween is a very superstitious holiday. It is rumored to be the day that the dead come back to haunt for one night. Nowadays, it is more about candy and costumes, but back in the 1600s, it was a very terrifying day. Here are 13 spooky Halloween superstitions…

  1. A person born on Halloween can speak to and see spirits and ghosts
  2. A burning a candle inside a jack-o-lantern on Halloween keeps evil spirits and demons at bay.
  3. To cast a headless shadow or no shadow at all is still believed by many folks in the United States and Europe to be an omen of death in the course of the next year.
  4. If you see a spider on Halloween, it could be the spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you.
  5. If you see a black cat on Halloween, a Witch is nearby.
  6. On Halloween, possessed killer clowns awake and haunt us.
  7. If you go to a crossroads at Halloween and listen to the wind, you will learn all the most important things that will befall you during the next twelve months.
  8. In Britain, people believed that the Devil was a nut-gatherer. At Halloween, nuts were used as magic charms.
  9. In North America, it’s bad luck if a black cat crosses your path and good luck if a white cat crosses your path. In Britain and Ireland, it’s the opposite.
  10. When passing a graveyard or a house where someone has died, turn your pockets inside out to make sure you don’t bring home ghost in your pocket.
  11. It’s dangerous to sleep when thirsty, for the soul will leave the body in search of water. If the body is wakened too quickly, the soul may not have time to get back and the body will die.
  12. If you carry a lump of bread in your pocket when walking in the dark. It will serve as an offering to ghosts.
  13. It is believed in several districts of Britain that it is lucky to see an empty hearse coming towards you, but unlucky if you turn round to watch it go by.
