Current Event Corner

By: Hannah Seidel-Nini ’26

Welcome to the Current Event Corner! This week we are covering a couple topics, including the Russia and Ukraine circumstance.

But first, we are talking about Stephen Breyer, a supreme court judge, who is retiring in June, at the age of 83. In response to his announcement, Joe Biden came out with a statement, saying that he will nominate the first African-American woman after he retires. There are three top candidates for the position, Ketanji Brown Jackson, Leondra Kruger, and J. Michelle Childs. Michele Childs seems to be a top contender among the people, and officials. Lindsey Graham, a Senator, came out with a quote; “I can’t think of a better person for President Biden to consider for the Supreme Court”

The other topic we are going to cover is the current situation between Ukraine and Russia. As of now, Ukraine wants to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Russia is opposed to this, and is moving their forces around Ukraine, occupying surrounding countries. Right now, Russia has made a confusing statement about Ukraine violating a ceasefire agreement back in 2015. At this time, Russia has made no move to attack Ukraine, or any surrounding countries.
