Top 10 Claude Giroux Moments on the Philadelphia Flyers

Top 10 Claude Giroux Moments on the Philadelphia Flyers

By Jonah Casel ‘27

Claude Giroux was the Flyers’ captain for over 8 years. Unfortunately, he was traded to the Florida Panthers on March 19, 2022. Today I’ll be counting down Giroux’s top 10 moments on the Philadelphia Flyers.

10-Tied. Claude Giroux’s first NHL Goal

The day was January 27, 2009. Giroux was a rookie. He was recently called up to the major leagues from the Flyers’ AHL team, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Early in the third period, Giroux caught a pass, started skating, and found himself on a breakaway. Shortly after that, the puck was in the net.

10-Tied. Claude Giroux’s Draft Day

At the 2006 NHL Entry draft, Bobby Clarke, the Flyers All-time leading scorer would announce the Flyers first round pick, at 22nd overall. Unfortunately for Giroux, Clarke forgot his name during the announcement of the pick!

  1. Claude Giroux’s Incredible Move and Goal vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

December 27, 2018, the Flyers played the Tampa Bay Lightning. They unfortunately lost 6-5 in OT, but that doesn’t matter, because we got a great goal from Claude Giroux, one of the finalists for goal of the year. Giroux gets around an entire team, sending the puck through his own legs and around defenseman Ryan McDonagh and goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy into the net.

  1. Giroux’s Iconic Shootout Goal vs Maple Leafs

On March 10, 2012, neither the Flyers nor the Maple Leafs could score in regulation or overtime, which led them to the shootout. Claude Giroux scored the only goal in the shootout in the second round. This goal was not only the game winner, it was also one of the best shootout goals I’ve ever seen. I can’t even begin to explain what he did, you just have to watch it.

  1. OT Game Winner in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals

The Flyers, as an 8 seed, in the Stanley Cup Finals. Tied at 3-3 between the Flyers and Hawks. The Hawks were obviously the higher seed, but they made one mistake. They didn’t cover Claude Giroux in front of the net. Matt Carle found Claude Giroux with a great pass, and on a deflection, Giroux somehow got it through the goalie’s legs and into the net, winning the game at home for all his fans.

  1. Shootout Winner vs. Rangers to Clinch the Playoffs

Last game of the season, Flyers vs. Rangers. Winner clinches the playoffs, the loser is out. The final round, the shootout tied 1-1, but Claude Giroux had other plans. He skates right up to the goalies and takes a wrist shot right through the goalie’s legs, to make the score 2-1. The Rangers had one more shot, but Flyers’ goalie Brian Boucher made the stop to send the Flyers to the playoffs.

  1. MVP of 2022 All-Star Game

In 2022, Claude Giroux was the only Flyer to make it to the All-Star game, to be the captain of the Metropolitan Division, since Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin was injured. Giroux and Jack Hughes made an effective duo, combining for 4 goals, winning the tournament. Giroux was named the MVP.

  1. Giroux’s First NHL Hat Trick

In 2018, Claude Giroux and the Flyers’ final game was once again against the Rangers. This one was different, however, because Claude Giroux got 3 goals for the Flyers, and got quite a few hats! This hat trick caused Giroux to reach 102 points in the season, second in points to only Connor McDavid. Also I may or may not have gone to this game…

  1. Last and 1000th Game

On March 17, 2022, Claude Giroux played the Nashville Predators in his 1000th game as a Flyer, and also his last game as a Flyer. The Flyers ended up winning, 5-4. Before the game, Claude Giroux was presented with the Silver Stick by Bobby Clarke, the same player who forgot his name on his draft day.

  1. Stadium Series OT Goal

The Flyers and Penguins played not in a hockey stadium, but outside in a football stadium. Despite the rain, a great game was played. In overtime, Claude Giroux got the puck, got past a Penguins defender, and scored. It was one Flyers fans will remember for a long time.

  1. “The Shift”

Claude Giroux and the Flyers were playing their rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins, in Game 6 of the 2010 first round playoffs. Claude Giroux sends Sidney Crosby flying into the boards, gets back up, gets a pass and scores. And did I mention that this was 32 seconds into the game?
