Nicknames are a HUGE part of hockey, and there are just some nicknames that fit perfectly, are hilarious to see, or are just plain weird.
- Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion
I have no idea why Bernie Geoffrion is called Boom-Boom. But it’s funny.
- Steve “The Puck Goes Inski” Buzinski
He let in 55 goals in 9 games. Makes sense.
- Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky
He is the best player in the history of the NHL and the undisputed G.O.A.T
- Ilya “Mr. Universe” Bryzgalov
The Solar System is so humongous big.

- Mario “Super Mario” Lemieux
Good game, even better player.
- Gordie “Mr. Hockey” Howe
He was so good that he named the sport. (Just kidding, that’s not what happened)

He dominated in net for the Sabres and Red Wings
- Alex “The Great 8” Ovechkin
He is number 8, and he is great.
- Sidney “Sid the Kid” Crosby
Not a kid anymore, considering he is in his 30’s, but ok.
- Nikolai “The Bulin Wall” Khabibulin
A good pun, and a good goalie, winning a Stanley Cup with the Lightning
- Teemu “The Finnish Flash” Selanne
He is the best Finnish player in history, and a top-20 NHL scorer of all time.
- Maurice “Rocket” Richard
He has an award named after him, the Rocket Richard Trophy, so obviously he was good. His speed was comparable to a Rocket.
- Marc-Edouard “Pickles” Vlasic

- Keith “SONK” Yandle
He has a signature move, and you guessed it, it’s called the SONK. It happens when he makes a fake pass and a defender falls for it.
- Brent “Chewbacca” Burns
His beard is only rivaled by Chewbacca.
- Pavel “Magic Man” Datsyuk
His moves were magic. He has a shot named after him!

Not only did he play on the same team as Mario Lemieux, Mario Jr. is actually an anagram for Jaromir!
- Jakob “Scrabble” Forsbacka Karlsson
You might not know this, but JFK’s (not the president) name has the most scrabble points.
- Johnny “Johnny Hockey” Gaudreau
His name is Johnny, and he plays Hockey.
- Henrik “The King” Lundqvist
He was really good during his rookie season. He was actually given this name by Rangers fans!
- Shayne “Ghost-Bear” Gostisbehere
You can figure out this one by yourself.
- John “Pajama Boy” Tavares
When he was on the Islanders, he wore pajamas that had the Maple Leafs’ logo on them. He was then traded to the Maple Leafs, and now Islanders fans hate him.

He has played in 9 playoff game 7’s, and he has won 8 of them. He has 15 points in game 7.
