Perspectives from the Women’s March

Hey guys, gals and everyone else out there, it’s Riley and Calvin here to interview some members of the Friends’ Central community who attended the Women’s March. If you don’t know, the Women’s March was an event where people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities gathered to protest many issues, but mainly women’s rights and president Trump. Millions of people attended these marches all across the world and there was even a march in Antarctica. So today, we share interviews of some people from the FCS community who attended the march. Interview #1: Mrs. Quinn Q: So, what’s your name? A: Alexa Quinn Q: Who did you vote for? A: I’d prefer not to say. Q: Why were you at the Women’s March? A: Because I felt that it was important to stand alongside other women to give voice to our concerns about being treated equally, paid equally, and respected equally. Q: Did you…

Thespians on Diction

Once, during the intermission of a play, my music director stood up from the pit, banged on the stage, and yelled, “Diction!” I thought it was really weird that he would do that, especially when there were still people in the audience. I understand now, though. Diction is one of the most important parts of a performance. Don’t know what it means? Dictionary.com says it is: DICTION [dik-shuh-n] the accent, inflection, intonation, and speech-sound quality manifested by an individual speaker, usually judged in terms of prevailing standards of acceptability; enunciation. Got it? Good. I’ll say it in English, too, because I don’t know about you, but I don’t always speak dictionary. Basically, diction means you pronounce your consonants sharply, like you’re stabbing them, and your vowels roundly, like you are trying way too hard to push them out of your mouth. It’s really important, because if you don’t pronounce your…

Happy Chinese New Year!

With 春節 (the Chinese New Year) just around the corner, this article will tell you all you need to know about this major holiday. Being Korean-Chinese myself, we almost always celebrate the New Year with my grandparents. I’m pretty sure I’m a rooster, which is cool as this is the Year of the Rooster! This year, the Chinese New Year begins tomorrow, Saturday, January 28. History In stories and legends, the beginning of the Festival was started by a beast named  年獸 (Nian). He had a weakness for humans, especially children, apparently. One year, the villagers decided to attempt to hide from the beast, to save themselves and their children. Right before they were about to leave, an old man suddenly appeared and told them he would stay the night and try to extract revenge on the beast. Needless to say, the villagers thought he was crazy. At night, when…

The Consumer Electronics Show. The place for innovation in technologies from electric toothbrushes to the future of automobiles. The place to showcase newer and faster computers, devices to improve home living, and huge strides towards full medical rehabilitation using technology. It’s Riley here to show to you all what I thought was the best of CES 2017. There has been many electronic wheelchairs in the past but the Whill Model M has a much more sturdy design that allows people using the wheelchair to move across different surfaces independently. This will have huge impact on disabled people’s lives, it will let them explore and experience the world much more. LG’s OLED W7 Television The new LG W series…

The Importance of Music

Music is the art form I find the most pure. It doesn’t evolve, it changes. From artist to artist, genre to genre, song to song, they are all completely different way of expressing yourself. I think of music as changing rather than evolving, because composers generally don’t build upon their last piece to make it better, they change it and try a different approach. Just like any other art form, music has many different styles. Some of which include: Classic, Folk, Opera, Spoken Word, EDM, Traditional, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Alternative, Punk, Techno, Country, and and Ambient. I wholeheartedly believe that anyone capable of hearing music can find the perfect style for them. Music can mean different things for anyone who hears it and interprets it for their own use. Music can be used so many ways. It really does help with everything, and can instantly provide a different environment anywhere….

Intro to Mini-Courses

What are mini-courses? Mini-courses are an activity that the entire middle school participates in where we all pick an activity and are involved with that for three days. They are educational but also extremely fun. Mini-courses allow for bonding between grades and meeting different people than just your best friends. The mini-course program allows for a relief from average learning and instead adds more interactive, experience-based learning. Last year, I did the Pasta Workshop mini-course in which we made at least eight pastas from scratch. Mini-courses provide unique and interactive experiences for you to learn about a subject of interest to you. Teachers never do the same mini-course twice so this year there will be new mini-courses. In fact, teachers have started to brainstorm ideas, so I took it upon myself to interview one anonymous teacher. How far into the minicourse brainstorming project are you? The teachers are early in…
