Anti-Semitism On the Rise

Disclaimer: If you are sensitive to recent events of anti-Semitism, be mindful of that while reading this article. I’m sure you are well aware of the this week’s acts of anti-Semitism which include bomb threats, knocking over headstones, and defending Pewdiepie and anti-Semitic memes. These past two weeks, eleven bomb threats have been targeted at Jewish community centers, or JCCs, and during January, sixty bomb threats were made targeting forty-eight JCCs. In the past week, over one hundred headstones were knocked over at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Pewdiepie recently made a video where he paid two men to hold up signs saying “Death to all Jews” which he called a social experiment. If you look up “anti-Semitic memes,” you might feel like breaking your device in half. This has been an ongoing problem for decades, but many anti-Semitic people feel more empowered since President Trump’s election. People online have been saying, “Hitler did nothing wrong”…

Hamilton: What Do You Think?

In total, we got eleven responses to this survey. Most of them were not from the middle school, which was surprising! For example, Assistant Head of School Ms. Richards voted. The favorite song from Hamilton at our school is “My Shot,” and it won by about 9%. I didn’t get as many responses as I hoped, so it might not have been as accurate as possible, but it was enough. For those of you who did respond, thanks! Loading…

Thespians On: The Best Plays on Broadway

Musicals are enchanting, with their singing and dancing and high-energy flare. They make more money than you can shake a stick at and steal the Broadway spotlight. Unfortunately, they steal this spotlight from the smaller, shorter, and, quite frankly, simpler plays. I think this is a sad occurrence, because there are some really funny, really touching, and really moving plays on Broadway, and I think they deserve to be known. The following are, in my opinion, the best plays on Broadway (and off of it.) The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime Off-Broadway (Tickets for Shows at the Kimmel Center) Based off the novel by the same name, this tells a touching story of an autistic teenage boy who is trying to find his mother. I strongly recommend this play, however, it does curse once in a while and handles some difficult themes for young children. Present Laughter Broadway…

Restaurant Review: Hymie’s Merion Delicatessen

“Your boss will be here. Your boss’s boss will be here. Shouldn’t you be here too?” -www.barsonsdeli.com Hello everyone! It is Charlie and Tucker, the dynamic duo collaborating yet again. As you may know, there have been some tragedies in the Jewish community across the country, and we thought it would be a perfect time to review a Jewish deli! Here we have Hymie’s Merion Delicatessen, which is an incredible Jewish deli located in Merion Station (hence the name), near two other fabulous restaurants, Saffron (find our review for that here), and Shangri-la (review coming soon!). Decor Hymie’s is known for it’s traditional diner feel, as well as its durability. It has been around since 1955 and has even survived a truck crashing into the building! But what most people cherish about Hymie’s design is the interior. Jewish history suffocates the walls of the building. The soft cushioned seats compliment people…

Review: Artist’s Pens

Are you interested in using pens in your artwork? Maybe this review is for you! Pen #1: Pilot G-2 05 This pen was obviously meant for writing, and it does it’s job. It’s ink is very black, and it writes smoothly. However for drawing I would avoid this pen. It’s very small, but the pen strokes show up so that you can’t get a clean black section. Instead you see some scratchy pen lines. 4/10 for drawing, 8/10 for writing, Pen #2: Micron Graphic 1 Sakura is known for its high quality micron drawing pens. The ink is nice, the nibs are nice, and they have a variance of sizes. However microns run out of ink if you work mainly with pens, and are not refillable. You might find yourself leaning towards more long-lasting pens if you work only with ink. The graphic 1 is the biggest micron size. It’s…

Social media, messaging and emails have become essential pieces of many people’s lives. These platforms, however, are more menacing and dangerous than some people know. One text message can be taken out of context and twisted, a post can be turned into a threat, a private email can be forwarded. Sometimes, though, a person may not make the right decision by sending an email, text, etc. in the first place, and in the end the issue that follows can actually be traced back to them and not the instigator. This is something extremely relevant to us as middle schoolers, because a large portion of our social lives is controlled through a form of social media (for most of us, at least). I recently heard a great solution to this issue of compulsive posting. A teacher spoke to me today about how she manages things. She said that she writes what…

Number 2 (San Francisco 49ers): Myles Garrett (DE) Myles Garrett is a DE from Texas A&M who was a junior. He is a great pass rusher and some people are comparing him to Julius Peppers. Number 3 (Chicago Bears): Leonard Fournette…

Quarantined: How to Deal with Toxic Friendships

We have experienced our fair share of friendship problems, as we think many (if not all) people have. We didn’t have a lot of guidance while dealing with these, so we were sort of just left to float there. Like sad little plankton. So, we sought out some help. We learned quite a few things about detecting toxic friendships, fixing issues, and in the end, if there is nothing to be done, how to end a relationship cleanly. We realized that without the tips that we got from our friends, our parents, etc., we never would have figured it out on our own. We’d still be there, stuck in the middle of the ocean, screaming, “Swim away,” whenever we saw a whale. (This metaphor is more about our undying love for Nemo, but it works.) Here are some of the tips we used: Detecting a Toxic Friendship   This can…

You Decide: Are eSports a “Real Sport?”

Hello, everyone! Luke here, with Jacob, and this is a new series called You Decide. We will have a small debate, and then ask for your answer. Our first You Decide is about whether if eSports should be considered a “real sport.” When you think of sports, what do you think of? Tennis? Basketball? Soccer? Well today, Jacob and I will show you a new type of competition: eSports. eSports are, long story short, competitive video gaming. In this article, we will debate whether eSports should be considered a real sport. At the end, we will ask your opinion, and you can drop it in the comments section below. So let’s get started. So… Jacob will be arguing for conventional sports and I will be arguing for eSports although we both enjoy eSports. Luke: So let’s start with a question: What is a sport? Technically, according to Dictionary.com, a sport…
