Two Math Proofs That Will Blow Your Mind

Hi everybody! Seth here with another cool math article. I discovered these proofs recently, and thought that they were really cool! So, sit back and enjoy! So, here are two math proofs that are essentially proving the same thing. The first one proves 1=0, and the second one proves 4=5. Neither one of them is accurate, but they are seemingly possible. 1=0 Step 1. Set a variable a equal to a variable b. We have a=b. Step 2. Multiply both sides by a. We have a^2=ab. Step 3. Subtract b^2 from both sides. We have a^2-b^2=ab-b^2. Step 4. Factor both sides, using the difference of squares on the left. We have (a+b)(a-b)=b(a-b) Step 5. Divide both sides by (a-b). We have a+b=b. Step 6. Subtract b from both sides. We have a=0. Step 7. Divide both sides by a. We have 1=0. 4=5 Step 1. We know 2+2=4. Step 2….

How to Create Colorful Shadows

Shadows are created when light hits an object and reflects onto a surface. Although most shadows are black, but some can be in color. Translucent objects create shadows based on their color. Water is translucent, glass is translucent, and some umbrellas are translucent. If you put food coloring in water and put that in a translucent glass and put in an area where you can get shadows, the water will create a shadow based on the color you put in. You can do this indoors or outdoors depending on what you are trying to do. Instructions: Get a translucent watering pail or glass Fill with water Put food coloring of your choice into the water Mix it in Wait for sunrise or sunset Put watering pail or glass in front of a surface of your choice The shadow should be in color if you are doing this right Just be…

Film Review: Logan

Directed by: James Mangold Written by: Michael Green and David James Kelly Starring: Hugh Jackman, Dafne Keen, Patrick Stewart, Stephen Merchant, and Boyd Holbrook The Positives Logan Personal rating – 95% Woah! This movie completely broke the mold of usual quippy superhero movies that we know. While we may love these movies, sometimes we need an actually deep and emotional film, and this is that film. It is dark, it is brutal, it is touching, it is funny, it is everything! It perfects and legitimizes the superhero genre while also managing to do the one thing that it seems no superhero movies candy these days: be a standalone film! It doesn’t set up anything or hint at other movies throughout the narrative, it is a drama that stands alone as a beautiful film. It had very stern tones and very intriguing action along with deep and meaningful subject matter and…

App Unwrap: Amaziograph

Amaziograph is a drawing app available on the App Store for $0.99. It lets you control the basics of your digital pen like selecting color, thickness, opacity, and clarity. What separates Amaziograph from other drawing apps is the focus on symmetry. It lets you select multiple templates for drawing. Each template allows you to repeat a design over multiple sections of the drawing. This results in a cool effect where a simple design is repeated in a cool way. The app is paid, but in my opinion  it is well worth 99¢. I love the app for fidgeting and mindless doodling. You can edit the section sizes for each preset in the settings. There isn’t much else to say about the app; it is very simple and user-friendly. It doesn’t have many advanced options so experienced artists may want to look at another app. Amaziograph is not a normal drawing…

Thespians On: Playwriting

Playwriting is a very, very, very, very, very, very long process. I mean, you could bang out a one-hundred page script full of lines like, “Yeah,” and, “Wow,” but that would be torture for the publishers and audiences alike. Some people think playwriting should be done on your own, or they refuse help from anyone else because they think they’re destined to be the new Shakespeare and Shakespeare wouldn’t possibly need help from anyone or anything. But truth is, the more people on the team, the better. I’m not suggesting you have one-hundred playwrights together trying to implement each of their ideas while also working off the others, but a good team of under twenty playwrights will create a strong creative environment. And if you’re lucky, most of them will have written a play before and so know a strong process. But just in case, I’ll let you in on…

Anti-Semitism On the Rise

Disclaimer: If you are sensitive to recent events of anti-Semitism, be mindful of that while reading this article. I’m sure you are well aware of the this week’s acts of anti-Semitism which include bomb threats, knocking over headstones, and defending Pewdiepie and anti-Semitic memes. These past two weeks, eleven bomb threats have been targeted at Jewish community centers, or JCCs, and during January, sixty bomb threats were made targeting forty-eight JCCs. In the past week, over one hundred headstones were knocked over at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Pewdiepie recently made a video where he paid two men to hold up signs saying “Death to all Jews” which he called a social experiment. If you look up “anti-Semitic memes,” you might feel like breaking your device in half. This has been an ongoing problem for decades, but many anti-Semitic people feel more empowered since President Trump’s election. People online have been saying, “Hitler did nothing wrong”…

Hamilton: What Do You Think?

In total, we got eleven responses to this survey. Most of them were not from the middle school, which was surprising! For example, Assistant Head of School Ms. Richards voted. The favorite song from Hamilton at our school is “My Shot,” and it won by about 9%. I didn’t get as many responses as I hoped, so it might not have been as accurate as possible, but it was enough. For those of you who did respond, thanks! Loading…
