Curling: What Is it, Exactly?

Let me regale you with a tale of a most noble of sports; Curling. It is similar to Bocce, which I’m now realizing probably isn’t the best comparison to make because Bocce is an equally obscure sport, if not more so. So, some basics. Curling is a Winter Olympic sport, and is most commonly played in Canada. The rules of Curling are as follows: two teams, each with four players, who take turns throwing granite rocks down the curling sheet (a rectangular sheet of ice) towards the target. Points are scored by having your rock closer to the center, with teams trying to get as many in a row and closest as possible. Each team has eight rocks which they throw in turns. At the end of each round the points are counted each game consists of 8-10 rounds. Curling’s unique style of movement, sweeping, allows for different patterns and…

The AAF’s Launch

The AAF’s Launch The new spring football league, the AAF’s (Alliance of American Football) opening games were a big success and made a lot of people think that this league might have a chance of succeeding. Its launch came at a perfect time: it was announced on March 20th, 2018. The league’s games began after the subpar Super Bowl and the missed call during the NFC championship game. It also came after an NFL season filled with roughing the passer calls and defensive players being flagged for good hits. This new league aims to bring football back to the way it was before rule changes while also removing unnecessary parts of the game and adding totally new elements. The major rule changes include: no kickoffs, teams will start at their own 25, unless the team that would be defending decides to go for an onside conversion where they will have…

Making Every Dollar Count At FCS

Money is essential for modern-day programs in our school, Friends’ Central School. We were curious as to how Friends’ Central has been doing financially, and how it offers the many classes, activities, clubs, and opportunities that it does. We went to speak with Miriam Schaefer who is the head of the Friends’ Central Business Office. She was very gracious in answering all of our questions and ended up talking to us for more than 20 minutes. We found her answers to be insightful, informative, and very interesting. Friends’ Central School has a large budget. The Friends’ Central Annual Report of Gifts includes the revenues collected and the expenses for all of the projects that we fund each year. It includes the costs such as renovating Shallcross and our brand new cafeteria. The school has a lot of other expenses she said and they are primarily the payroll and benefits for…

Mr. Emerson, Secret Scientist.

As you may or may not know, Mr. Emerson has been subbing for Mrs. Morsa for the past month. He has his own Wikipedia page and has had some really cool jobs. Read on to learn about his past and how he got to where he is now.   How did you end up teaching?   I had always thought about teaching math but I never got a chance to do it. Originally I did tutoring to be helpful but I realized the school needed help with long term breaks for teachers. My choice for subbing at Friends’ Central was partially influenced by the fact that my kids went there.   What other jobs have you had?   I was both a physician and a scientist for forty years. I was also the president of Haverford College for five years. I would run a laboratory with other scientists doing tests…

What is Shadow PC?

Shadow is a company that is attempting to revolutionize the way you game. They have been working on a software that allows you to play almost any game on all high settings from almost any device, including your phone. The software achieves this by connecting you to a top-of-the-line gaming PC (personal computer) at one of Shadow’s facilities. Although other gaming companies such as Nvidia have tried to do this, there has previously been too much input latency (a delay or lag) in gameplay to actually play anything, especially something competitive. But with Shadow, the input lag is way lower than any other cloud-based gaming system. When using Shadow PC, the only thing your machine actually has to run is the software itself, which isn’t demanding of expensive hardware. With this in mind you can run the software on most devices including your phone by downloading an app. Since you…

New Paladins Update Just Released!

Paladins has just released a huge update to the game. A whole new event and map are now included under the name “End Times.” The story goes that the Paladins have finally tracked the Magistrate to the desert (explaining the new map called “Shattered Desert”) where shards of the shattered moon fell. (The Moon was destroyed in an event that has not yet been explained). The Paladins are trying to catch the Magistrate, but mysterious fractures in space have started appearing. This has added an interesting play mechanic involving portals. In the End Times event you collect chrono shards by completing achievements in the End Times game mode such as getting 1,000,000 damage, or earning 900-point control time (both of these achievements are not an easy feat). By earning chrono shards one can unlock limited time items including emotes, poses, sprays, skins, and death stamps. This update has also announced…
